How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone
iOS already finds exact duplicates for free. Here is how to use it, what it misses, and how to handle the near-identical shots that take up the most space.
1. Use the built-in Duplicates album (iOS 16 and later)
- Open Photos and scroll to Utilities.
- Tap Duplicates. If you don't see it, iOS hasn't found any yet; indexing can take a while after a big import and runs while the iPhone is locked and charging.
- Tap Merge on a set, or Select to merge several at once.
Merging keeps the highest-quality version, combines details like captions and keywords into it, and moves the other copies to Recently Deleted.
2. Know what "duplicate" means to iOS
The Duplicates album finds exact copies and copies saved at a different size or format. It does not group near-duplicates: the five almost identical shots of the same sunset, bursts, or a photo you took twice a second apart. On most phones those similar shots are the bigger problem.
3. Clean up similar shots
- Bursts: open a burst, tap Select, keep your favorites; iOS offers to delete the rest.
- Series of near-identical photos: go through them in date order and keep the sharpest one. This is slow by hand, which is where an app helps.
4. Empty Recently Deleted
Merged and deleted copies stay in Photos → Utilities → Recently Deleted for 30 days and keep using space until you delete them there.
What not to do
- Don't merge in bulk without a look if you edit photos: a copy with a different crop or filter may count as a duplicate.
- Don't pay for "duplicate finders" that promise more than iOS allows. No app can reach photos in other apps like WhatsApp's private storage; they only see your Photos library.
- Don't forget iCloud Photos syncs deletions to all your devices.
